Syracuse
Syracuse is a great town to live in. The city has lots of green spaces and street trees, a variety of architecture, supports the arts, and the weather will always leave you guessing.
Snow and Central New York weather:
Syracuse gets a huge amount of snow, is overcast and cold, and it rains a lot. We recommend waterproof insulated clothing, boots and quality wool socks. Taking vitamin D every morning in the winter can improve your mental and physical health while increasing cognitive function. Stretch before shoveling 2 feet of snow off the sidewalk and car.
Local Greenspaces and Hiking:
Thornden Park next to SU is full of beautiful natural surprises, and is a great place to run, walk your dog or sled during the winter.
Oakwood Cemetary next to ESF has a lot of quiet and beautiful plant specimens.
Barry Park near Broad Street has a water detention basin teaming with wildlife and a one mile jog around a duck filled creek.
Day trips:
Central New York- 25 minutes South of Syracuse near Tully, check out Labrador Hollow and Unique area, along with Tinkers Falls.
Highland Forest is also nearby in Fabius, with great cross country ski trails, hiking and views.
The Fingerlakes Trail/Onondaga County Trail/North Country Trail all run/conglomerate in the Labrador/Tinkers Falls/Morgan Hill State Forest area and have miles and miles of peace, quiet and clean air.
Morgan Hill State Forest is a great place for biking, hiking, running, camping and finding wild edibles.
Fingerlakes Region for wine tasting, touring, camping and good food:
Red Newt Cellars, great winery, locally sourced food, dog friendly deck, nice people, and wine tasting. http://rednewt.com/ww2/ Hector, NY on Seneca Lake
Stonecat Cafe: Local Organic cuisine http://stonecatcafe.com/ Hector, NY on Seneca Lake
Ithaca, the home of Cornell University and Ithaca College is a small, vibrant town just a little over an hour south of Syracuse. Ithaca has Greenstar Grocery and Co-op, beautiful waterfalls, science center for kids, great music and festivals like the Grassroots Festival and CNY Yoga Fest, and other hidden treasures.
